If you own a home, or any other property, and it is not already registered at the National Land Registry, then you can volunteer to register it if you so wish.
Unregistered homes are very rare and becoming rarer all the time. This is because registering a home is compulsory whenever it is sold, and in the event of certain other transactions taking place that concern the home. This compulsion was gradually extended over the whole country over a period of decades, but has been more or less in place throughout the country for well over 20 years, and in many places much longer than that. So, in practical terms, the only unregistered properties left are ones that have not been sold for at least 20 years and often much longer than that.
Nevertheless, if your property remains unregistered you can volunteer to register it. Registration does cost money, but the advantage of it is that once your property is registered you do not have to worry so much about keeping your title deeds safe. This is because if you ever lose them the Land Registry will still have its records of your ownership of the property safely tucked away inside its computers, so that no real harm would be done by the deeds being missing.
