A Litigant In Person, or LIP for short, is what the legal system calls a person who is involved in litigation, whether as claimant or defendant, or whatever, but has not employed lawyers in connection with it. He does the case himself or in person as the name suggests.
When it comes to costs, Litigants In Person are entitled to legal costs if they succeed just the same as anybody else. However, if they have not employed lawyers then they do not really have any legal costs to claim. They can claim a little bit for their own time instead, but this is no where near as much as a lawyer would charge.
Sometimes a person starts off as a litigant in person and then employs lawyers later on, or vice versa. This is okay and costs can be recovered for the lawyers part of the case if costs are eventually recoverable at all.
