WHY USE US?

We do not act for crooked clients. However, that simple statement is a lot easier to say than to put into action.

First of all, what exactly do we mean by a crooked client? Well, for starters, we don't mean people who just happen to have strayed the wrong side of the line. None of us are perfect, we all make mistakes, and if you fall into that category then we will be prepared to help you defend any proceedings, and if necessary, minimise any penalty that might be coming your way. This is because, in our view, nice people who transgress are not automatically crooked.

On the other hand, there are people who just are basically crooked and transgress all the time because that's the way they are. That's what we mean by crooked and we don't act for those sorts of people. There are plenty of other lawyers in the world who are more than happy to help them. Usually, they know who they are anyway, because those with that sort of lifestyle usually do, so they would not come to us in the first place.

Not all of life is cut and dried however, and so we don't always know whether a person is a crook, according to our definition, the first time we meet them. It is in the nature of crookedness that nobody ever walks in the door proclaiming themselves to be such. Crooks usually try to hide the fact that they are crooks. As a result, we only find out about it later on whilst we are acting for them.

The law requires that in many situations where we become aware that a client is involved in something that is against the law, or is or might be against the law, then we are required to report that to the appropriate authorities. We are also required in many of these circumstances to keep from that client the fact that we have made such a report, and also in certain circumstances to cease acting for that client anymore, either in relation to certain matters or generally without giving the client any reason for that.

Even in situations where there is no legal requirement, we absolutely reserve the right to cease to act for a client, without giving any reason, where we consider that either the law or our own ethical standards are or may be or become in danger of being compromised if we were to act or continue to act.

Thankfully the number of clients to whom this ever applies is very small indeed, but if you are one of them then be warned, we take our legal responsibilities very seriously indeed.
