We are almost unique in the legal profession in taking our ethical commitment to truth, justice and fair play very seriously indeed. That is why in a suitable case we are prepared to consider offering our services completely free of charge.
But because there is great demand for free legal services, we have to be very selective in who we help for free. Generally speaking:
- It must be something you can't afford to pay for, or possibly something that you can afford to pay for, but which is mainly of benefit to other people rather than yourself, and therefore it wouldn't be reasonable to expect you to pay for it yourself.
- You must have a strong case or perhaps not if in some way it's an important case that involves important principles or could effect lots of people.
- It should preferably be a case that cannot easily be financed in any other way, e.g., no win no fee.
- It helps if your case is one that is recommended to us by somebody like a member of parliament, local councillor, advice worker, social worker, magistrate, etc.
Whether or not we do any work for free is entirely at our discretion, and the fact that we do do some for free doesn't mean that you're entitled to anymore of it for free. The discretion continues to be ours and we can decide for ourselves how much assistance we supply, and if and when we choose to withdraw this assistance.
