Sometimes you can get a court judgment against somebody to pay you money, or whatever it may be, and now you need to enforce it, but you have no idea what it is that they have got to pay you with. Or it might simply be that the debtor is very successfully hiding their assets, or whatever it may be. If that's the case then you can ask the court that gave you the judgment to carry out, what is called an Oral Examination of the debtor.
An Oral Examination is nothing to do with dentistry. It is simply an appointment where a debtor is summoned to attend court so as to be questioned under oath as to his income and assets and so on. Because he has been summoned to court to do this if he does not attend he can be arrested, and if he does attend, because it's under oath, if he tells any untruths he can be prosecuted for that as well. So, an oral examination can be a good way of finding out where the money is so that you can then go on and enforce your judgment.
