Sometimes the pace of court procedure is simply too fast to keep up with. For example, say that you have been ordered to produce a certain document by a certain date and you know you will be able to produce the document, but the deadline is proving difficult to meet. In that case you want the deadline shifting, i.e., the process slowing down, so as to give you more time to comply.
Generally speaking, these sorts of extensions of time are available upon request, so in most cases there would not be much difficulty in this situation. However, that is not an open ended invitation to take as much time as you like. The more time you ask for, and the more often you ask for it, the less likely you are to get the extension you are seeking on each successive occasion. So there is a little leeway, but not much.
