Expert evidence is not allowed except by permission of the court, but permission is usually given if it is relevant.
Sometimes each party has their own expert, often however the court will insist on one joint expert to advise on the whole case.
An expert witness is the only witness who is allowed to express an opinion (as opposed to a fact), as long as he bases his opinion on facts and the opinion is within his area of expertise.
An expert owes his duty to the court not to any party, even the party that instructed and pays him. His report has to contain certain wording that confirms that he understands his duty to the court.
