If a bill remains unpaid then your lawyer is entitled to retain any documents or property of yours until it is paid. This right attaches to any property even if it is greatly in excess of the value of the amount that is due to the lawyer for fees.
If the lawyer has conducted litigation for you the lawyer has additional rights in any property recovered or preserved for you whether it is in the lawyer's possession or not and in respect of all costs incurred whether billed or unbilled.
The lawyer also has a right to ask the court to make a charging order for any assessed costs.
