Remember that a lawyer will supply a justification of any account you receive on request. If you feel it is too high the lawyer will be happy to discuss it with you. A good lawyer values your goodwill too much to risk losing it over the amount of a bill.
If, by any chance, you cannot agree the amount of a bill with a lawyer, then you are entitled to query the bill and apply to have it assessed by a District Judge. Then, what the judge says binds the lawyer, and if it's less than the bill then the bill will have to be reduced accordingly.
Generally speaking, anything that you have specifically agreed to, for example, a specific hourly rate, or a specific item of expenditure, you would have difficulty challenging. However, anything else, such as the amount of time spent on a matter would be challengable.
There may also be a right to object to the bill by making a complaint to the Legal Complaints Service (or the Office for Legal Complaints).
