In an ideal world it would be nice to be able to predict the total amount of costs that any particular legal dispute might incur. However, this is surprisingly difficult; but lawyers, being experienced in these things, should, in most cases, be able to give you a rough guess of what a particular court case might cost.
Sometimes however it really is just impossible to predict.
In theory, absolutely any legal dispute at all, even if it's only about something relatively modest in financial terms, could cost you anything from nothing (because you do it all yourself without lawyers) right up to millions of pounds (because you hire all the best lawyers on a no expenses spared basis). It really all depends on how much money you want to spend on it.
In addition, absolutely any case, even a very modest one that starts off in the Small Claims Court could in theory be the subject of appeals and then more appeals and more appeals right up to the highest courts in Europe, and this could make what seemed at first sight a very simple straightforward dispute into an incredibly expensive one.
So the moral of the tale is this: when it comes to legal costs estimates and predictions are only that, and no more. No-one can say for sure what the future holds.
